The Virtual Assistant Connection: Will Having a Niche Help Me

Maybe you've heard one of these phrases, "The riches are in the niches" or "Niche down to scale up," and wondered if they're true.

I don’t quite agree.

There are three ways to niche down: you can niche by service, industry, or both.

For example:

  • You only work with coaches
  • You only provide email newsletters
  • You only provide email newsletters for coaches

However, in the beginning, unless you're an expert who is widely sought-after and has experience and connections in a particular service field or industry, I would go broad and offer general administrative services with a list of skills as long as you can.

If you’ve spent years offering a specific service at a job, like social media strategy for Instagram, and you love it, then it makes sense to niche.

If you have been in the wedding industry for years and know tons of people who can use your services, then that makes sense as well.

In my case, I found it to be difficult to find my true niche until I had been working for a while and it became apparent what kind of work I really wanted to do and who I liked working with.

When I first started out, I chose the niche of helping start-ups. Start-ups sounded exciting and I thought I would be able to make a big impact. I also thought it would be a lot of fun. But after working with a couple of startups, I discovered that this sector of the business world was not a good fit for me.

After a few years, I realized that my best clients, the ones I loved working with the most, were established solo professionals across many industries who needed similar services.

I have clients who are financial planners, marketing consultants, nutritionists, coaches, speakers, and trainers, all who want my very favorite services, which are helping them with their email newsletters, updating their websites, and helping them solve process problems in their businesses.

So be patient when you’re just starting out, and give yourself the benefit of being broad until you can identify your sweet spot, your niche.
