Why I Left My Paycheck Behind

The VA Connection: Why I Left My Paycheck Behind

When I started my VA business in 2010, I had no idea how much my life would change.

I'd worked in corporate America for 17 years. I was used to a regular paycheck, healthcare benefits, three weeks of paid vacation. I never understood why anyone would give that up.

And then I became a mom. And I understood exactly why.

For 11 years, I set my own hours. I decided how much money I made. I worked from home. I chose who I worked with. I was the boss, which was both the good news and the bad news.

When I look back at my old fears about leaving the security of a paycheck behind, I realize something: I felt more secure as a VA than I ever did with a job. Because I was in charge of my financial future. I knew how to create a steady stream of clients and revenue. I could take my work on the road or take time off whenever I wanted.

And the benefits I thought I was giving up? I pay for my own healthcare now. I take vacations when I want to. The "security" I thought I needed from an employer turned out to be something I could create for myself.

I'm not saying it was easy. It wasn't. But I built something that fits my life instead of squeezing my life into someone else's schedule.

I'd never go back.

If you've been wondering whether this kind of life is possible for you, I want you to know: It is. Women do this every day. They start VA businesses, find clients, and build something that's theirs.

 You can too.
