You Can't Grow a Business on Empty

For years, I ran my business on bagels, Taco Bell, and Diet Coke.
I wasn't trying to eat poorly. I was just trying to keep up.
But here's what I noticed: By 3 PM, my brain was foggy. I didn't feel good in my skin. I wanted to hide and stay small.
And you can't grow a business from that place.
You can't confidently reach out to your network. You can't show up on social media. You can't talk about your pricing when you're trying to hide.
Here's the truth I learned after 15 years.
You can't build on empty.
When you eat well, you think clearly. When you think clearly, you show up better. And when you take care of yourself? Your confidence grows.
Your business is only as sustainable as you are.

The Season is Changing. Are You?

There's a noticeable change in the air this week. Cooler mornings. Shorter days. A little less yard work. Here on the farm, we're shifting into fall mode. The ordchard is weeded, and we're starting to prep for colder weather. The chickens are loving the cooler temps, and I'm excited to see the pecans ripen. Even as the seasons change, my work life stays steady, that's because I've built a business that runs on my schedule.
Fall is the perfect time to reflect, reset, and take small steps toward building the business and life you want. Whether you're already a Virtual Assistant or just getting started, a few thoughtful tweaks can make the rest of the year more profitable and peaceful.
What Happened in Spartanburg

Last week, 24 Virtual Assistants gathered in Spartanburg, SC for something special: The VA Connection LIVE.
We talked about the voices in our heads that tell us to stay small. We shared stories we'd never told before. We practiced being brave in our businesses.
And something shifted.
People who'd been stuck for months started taking action. Boundaries were set. Emails were sent. Old patterns were broken.

Game Freaking On
September 22, 2025
Yesterday I was going through some old files and found a spreadsheet from 2010. It was my debt payoff tracker. On it was every credit card I owed, with its balance and due date, sorted by the smallest amount first. At the top, I'd written: “Game freaking on.” Looking at it now, I remember that moment when everything shifted—when I stopped being a victim of my circumstances and decided to take back my life.
