The Question That Stops Most VAs Cold

The VA Connection: The Question That Stops Most VAs Cold

You're at a networking event.

Or a backyard barbecue.

Or standing in line at the grocery store.

Someone asks: "So what do you do?"

And your brain... freezes.

You know you need a good answer. You've practiced this. Kind of. Mostly in your head.

But what comes out is some version of:

"Well, I'm a Virtual Assistant, so I kind of do a lot of things... like, I help people with their businesses... you know, admin stuff, but also some other things depending on what they need... social media sometimes, or email management, or really whatever..."

By the time you finish, the other person's eyes have glazed over.

They smile politely. They say "Oh, cool." And the conversation moves on.

No follow-up questions.

No "Can you send me your info?"

No referrals.

Just... nothing

Here's what I know after 15 years and 20,000+ billable hours:

The way you answer this question is the difference between attracting great clients and staying stuck.

Most VAs think they need:

  • A perfect website
  • A fancy logo
  • More training
  • A long list of certifications

But the truth?

You need to be able to clearly and confidently say what you do in under 15 seconds.

That's it.

Because people can't hire you, or refer you, if they don't understand what you actually do.

I created what I call the Referral Formula years ago because I was fumbling myself.

I'd ramble. I'd over-explain. I'd list everything I could do, hoping something would stick.

And I wasn't seeing results.

But once I simplified it, once I had a clear, confident answer, everything changed.

People started remembering me.

Referring me.

Hiring me.

The formula is so simple that my husband Greg can recite it. My family has heard it a thousand times.

And it's helped thousands of my students land clients, just by knowing how to answer this one question.

If you're in VA Business Launch Pad training this week, we're covering the Referral Formula live on Tuesday at noon.

I'll walk you through:

  • The three mistakes people make when describing their services
  • The exact template I use (and teach all my students)
  • How to practice it so it rolls off your tongue naturally
  • Why saying LESS gets you MORE clients

If you're not registered yet, you can jump in at VABusinessLaunchPad.com.

And if you're an established VA who already has this dialed in? You might still pick up a refinement or two. (Or at least get a reminder to tighten yours up.)

The next time someone asks what you do, you should be able to answer with total confidence.

No rambling. No stumbling. No "well, it depends..."

Just a clear, simple answer that makes people say: "Oh! I know someone who needs that."

That's how referrals happen.
