The Virtual Assistant Connection: The Right Tools for the Right Job

When you first start out, it’s easy to get by with “back of the envelope” gear: a spare computer, an old notebook, a corner of the kitchen table.

Don’t do that! These tools don’t allow you to be dynamic and to expand. As you get busier with more and more clients, your string and chewing gum set up will collapse of its own weight.

Having the right tools will make you more efficient, more productive and, believe it or not, happier. Hardware and software are not that expensive these days – so get everything you’ll need in place at the beginning.

Among the tools you’ll need are a reliable computer, time tracking software, a project management system, a data backup solution, a printer, scanner, email, calendar, anti-virus software, a password manager, video conferencing software, and a tool for screen sharing.

And, those are just to run your own business.

To help your clients with theirs, you’ll also need a PDF editor, MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), and a graphics editor, along with the occasional custom tool for regular and important clients.

(Expert tip: Keep close track of any tools that have monthly subscription fees. It’s easy to stop using these when a project ends and unknowingly keep paying for several more months!)
