The VA Connection: When we want our lives to change, we usually hope our circumstances will be better than they are right now

When we want our lives to change, we usually hope our circumstances will be better than they are right now. The problem is that when that happens, and life improves, most of the time, we still want it to be better than it is right now.

Not only is it human nature, but the result is we don’t realize our lives are getting better when, in fact, they are. Most improvements in life happen a little at a time and can seem undetectable.

When I first started my Virtual Assistant business, I grocery shopped every other day, but only for the food my daughter Emily and I needed immediately. I was trying to manage a minimal cash flow and make sure we had enough to eat.

During one memorable trip to the grocery store when Emily was nine, she approached me with two fistfuls of Luna Bars, excited to have more than a week's worth of her favorite snack in our kitchen.

I didn’t want to worry her about our financial situation, so I explained that we were walking home and carrying the groceries, which might be too much to manage with all those Luna Bars. I asked her to choose one bar for tomorrow and told her I would return the next day for another. Thankfully, she agreed.

Fast forward to today, and Emily, now 22, enjoys the luxury of a Luna Bar-filled pantry. I can’t pinpoint when our financial circumstances shifted and allowed for this change because it was so gradual I didn’t notice.

But recently, while loading 15 of our favorite bars (White Chocolate Macadamia) onto the conveyor belt at the upscale grocery store in our town, I paused and couldn’t help but reflect on that time not long ago when something as simple as maintaining a stash of Luna Bars felt out of reach.

Life has a way of evolving in ways we might not always notice. Sometimes, the most significant changes happen right before our eyes. This reminds me that while looking for the important, noticeable, and meaningful changes in life; progress often unfolds slowly, one Luna Bar at a time.
