Where’s Your Comfort Zone?

The VA Connection: Where's Your Comfort Zone?

As a Virtual Assistant - or human being, for that matter - when we try something new, we usually bump up against our comfort zone.

You know that uncomfortable feeling in your gut, combined with imagining the worst possible outcome, not to mention the voice screaming in your head, telling you, “I can’t do THAT!!”

The problem is that when we give the voice of our comfort zone the authority to make decisions, we can’t grow, change, or achieve our goals. And that’s because our comfort zone is designed to keep us safe.

Here’s the rub: we’re jumping to a conclusion that doesn’t make sense. We think that if we’re not safe (in our comfort zone), we must be unsafe or in danger. DANGER?

Think about how ridiculous that is for a minute.

Here’s where you get stuck:

  • I’m not comfortable telling anyone about my business
  • I’m not comfortable attending networking events
  • I’m not comfortable updating my LinkedIn profile
  • I’m not comfortable choosing a business name
  • I’m not comfortable [fill in the blank]

Nothing on this list, including [fill in the blank], is dangerous. Seriously. To succeed, you’ll need to get into action and get a little uncomfortable. After all, if you could think your way into business, you’d already be a billionaire, right?

Consider this: When you learned how to walk, you were out of your comfort zone. But as you became proficient, your comfort zone changed – it expanded, and it moved to include walking.

It’s the same thing when youre in business. Just like there was the reward of mobility when you learned to walk, there is a reward when you become a successful business owner making money. You can take care of yourself, you can take care of your family, and you can help your clients create success. As you take the necessary steps to achieve this, your comfort zone will expand again.

So then, what’s the fastest way to expand your comfort zone? Acknowledge that it’s there, notice what it’s trying to tell you, and then ask yourself if you are really in danger or just a little scared. Then grab some courage and jump in.
