Success At Any Age

The VA Connection: Success At Any Age

One of the things I love most about being a Virtual Assistant is that age is irrelevant. Truly.

I started my VA business, RocketGirl Solutions, at 50 and could easily start again today at 63. No problem. I’ve had students succeed in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s.

Back in 2010, before starting my business, I looked for a job because I needed to start earning money quickly. That approach had always worked in the past. But this time, I realized the world had changed since my last job hunt at 36. I had changed too.

I was no longer willing to be tied to an office, asking for permission to take time off, or accept the salary my employer offered instead of deciding how much I wanted to make. I wanted more control—over my time, my income, and my life.

The good news is that being a Virtual Assistant is a profession where maturity pays off. Maturity to stop chasing get-rich-quick schemes and focus on building something sustainable. Maturity to appreciate how working from home can transform not only your life but also the lives of your family—because you’ve experienced the alternative and you want something more.

I want you to know that starting a business comes with its own set of challenges. You might find yourself worrying that you don’t have enough to offer. Maybe you feel you’re not “technical enough.” Or you might believe you need corporate experience to succeed.

Here’s the truth: these fears aren’t reality.

As a Virtual Assistant, your value isn’t measured by your techiness or your previous work experience. What matters is your ability to solve problems, be reliable, and earn trust.

Communication and a willingness to learn are far more important than being a technology wizard. And if technology scares you, don’t worry—you can learn as you go.

The primary thing clients care about is whether you can make their lives easier and their businesses run more smoothly. Your life experiences—whether managing a household, coordinating a community project, or running a small business—are valuable skills clients want.

The beauty of being a Virtual Assistant is the freedom and flexibility it offers. You get to decide what services to offer, who you want to work with, and how much you want to charge. You can work from home, a coffee shop, or even while traveling—it’s entirely up to you.

Starting a VA business isn’t about your age; it’s about your mindset. It’s about being open to learning, challenging yourself, and embracing new opportunities. Yes, there will be moments when you doubt yourself. But every successful VA I know has faced those moments and pushed through. You can, too.

So, if you’re holding back because you think you’re too old or don’t have the “right” skills, let me tell you this: the only thing standing in your way is the story you’re telling yourself. Rewrite that story. Age isn’t a barrier—it’s your greatest asset.

You’ve got this!
