Starting is the Easy Part

Starting is easy. 

Starting feels like progress. You buy the program, open the notebook, tell everyone you're doing it. 

For about a week, starting even feels like winning. 

I talk with women every week who are excited about what they've just started.

Ask what they've finished lately, and the conversation gets quiet. 

I know because I've lived this. Before RocketGirl Solutions, I had a business that wasn't working and years of unfiled taxes stacked in bankers boxes in my living room. I walked past those boxes every single day. 

Here's what those boxes taught me: an unfinished thing never just sits there. It takes a little from you every time you look at it and look away. Not enough to stop you. Just enough to chip away at you. Back then I couldn't explain why I was so worn out all the time. The boxes were part of the answer. 

And here's what nobody tells you about the other side: 

Finishing is exhilarating. 

Not relief. Exhilaration. 

Most adults haven't felt that in years. School was filled with finish lines. Graduations, report cards, last days. 

Then we grew up. Now you have to build your own. Most people never do. They just keep starting, because starting is the part that feels good right away. 

But finishing is where everything you wanted actually lives. The clients come after the website is done. Not half done. The confidence comes after the program is finished. Not just bought. 

Finishing isn't a personality trait. It's a decision. You decide before you start that this one gets done, and then done outranks your mood for as long as it takes. 

Pick one thing. Not the biggest one. The one that takes your power away. Finish it this week. 

Then stand there for a minute and let yourself feel it.
