The Virtual Assistant Connection - Never Give a Discount

When you’re a brand-new Virtual Assistant, sometimes it seems like a good idea to work for a really low hourly rate as a way to get started, or to give big introductory discounts. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Here are some things to remember when you’re new

  1. You weren’t born yesterday. Your clients are hiring ALL of your experience, not just your experience as a VA. It doesn’t matter if your skills and experience are from volunteer work, helping a friend, or a job you had 10 years ago. If you know how to do something, you know how to do it, even if you just learned how. This means you have value right out of the gate.

  2. Your price is your price. Not everyone will love your prices. But those aren’t “your people,”so don’t worry about it. If someone asks for a “non-profit rate,” say you don’t have one. If someone says, “That’s more than I expected to pay,” don’t say a word. If someone says, “I’ll refer you to all my friends if I can get a lower rate,” thank them, but let them know you don’t work that way. If you want to get paid what you’re worth, you need to ask for it and stick to it. You don’t need to explain anything to anyone😊.

  3. The best clients are willing to pay more. Over the years, the closer I got to my hourly rate matching my skills, the better my clients became. These days, my clients are successful business people who appreciate my value. Because I take myself seriously, they take me seriously.

When you charge what you’re worth, you’ll earn what you deserve. It’s not always easy, and it takes a dose of courage, but it’s worth it!
